E4T Fruit and Vegetable Bar. Green Beans, Fruit or Vegetable?

Normally you will find the E4T Fruit and Vegetable Bar in this space. And that’s supposed to be a little reminder to each of us that we should eat 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables everyday.

But in honor of the Science Friday posts at other blogs, today we have a discussion question:

Are ‘Green Beans’ a Fruit or Vegetable?u They sure don’t look like other beans.

This is a fun question. I remember the discussions about tomatoes…fruit vs. veggie. I think fruit won because the seeds were encased inside an edible wrapper. If that’s the definition, green beans would be a fruit. However, strawberries would not because the seeds are held on the outer surface. But they are fruit, right?

Also in the case of apples, the seeds never become edible, whereas in green beans the seeds DO become edible and remain edible for months or years. In this case green beans are green as in not ripe like green peppers vs. red peppers (mangoes [unless you live in Florida where mangoes are, well, mangoes])

Bottom line….I’m probably way out of date on the fruit vs. veggie discussion. I will follow this topic with interest.
