The real reason for exercise

The author of The Hacker’s Diet, John Walker, has generously given me permission to discuss his diet in detail using some quotes, with links back to his site. (Earlier E4T articles on The Hacker’s Diet)

I never really felt comfortable talking about weighted moving averages, but today’s topic could have been written by me.

What, Me Exercise?

Don’t kid yourself into thinking that exercise, by itself, will make you lose weight. Consider the following activities, and the number of calories an average person burns per hour in each.

Activity Calories/hour
Walking 300
Bicycling 300
Aerobics 400
Swimming 400
Tennis 500
Basketball 500
Jogging 700

Compare those numbers, remembering that they’re for a full hour spent nonstop in the exercise, with the calories in the following food items: Continue reading

July 11, 2006 — Just 4 Today

Just 4 today, I won’t eat any Oyster Crackers, I’ll drink 2 liters of water (I’ve already drunk a little over a liter), I’ll take my fiber supplement twice (I’ve taken it once), I will not go to the candy machine (not even to ‘look’), I’ll bring my read-made sandwich and chopped sweet bell peppers to work for lunch.

What are you going to do today?

Are Oyster Crackers the new M&Ms?

I’m not going to eat between meals (not even Oyster Crackers) and I’m not going to take seconds. Just today. And I’m going to try this for a year to see what happens.

I’ve learned that I’ll never be safe from temptation. I did very, very well yesterday up until about 10 p.m. when I started nibbling on Oyster Crackers while watching a show about Nannies. I can’t tell you how they (Oyster Crackers, not nannies) came to be on the table, but I can tell you they are a tempting treat. Keep them away from casual reach if you want to stay out of trouble!

It was a pathetic ending for a nearly perfect day. I successfully avoided the candy machine. First, I went for a walk and then I put my change in a co-workers office (it’s still there.) I might buy a piggy bank to keep in there for the purpose (hmm — I just thought of that, but it almost makes sense….)

Also, I heard some whispers (just below hearing level) from my ‘little voice.’ Maybe if I listen very closely I’ll hear it for sure today (Is this a meal? Have I eaten yet?).
