Just 4 Today, I will drink my fiber supplement twice (I’ve drunk it once), walk 3 miles (I walked 3.5 miles yesterday!), drink 2 liters of water (I’ve drunk about 1/3 so far), not eat between meals and not take seconds. And Just Today, I’ll stop and contemplate all the benefits I’ve gotten from working on these goals everyday and how lost I’d be without them.
Update: A week of daily commitments
If it wasn’t for Sunday’s sudden magic-weight gain, I’d have nothing but great things to say about this week. And actually, in spite of that horrible experience, I think things went very well. [MORE]
First of all, I couldn’t have invented a more shocking reality-check than an overnight weightgain if I spent a week thinking about it (I mean, I didn’t think it was possible.) And it’s not like it disappeared as magically. No, most of it stuck around until this morning when (finally) things settled down to the place I was at last Wednesday.
The thing is, I’m pretty sure I’ve been eating at the far right of the chart again (mostly by taking portions that are just a little too big — not really breaking The Commitment, but bending it dramatically). And when you do that, you lose your buffer zone. So when special things came up, those little extras were a little too much extra — and my weight had no where to go but up.
Anyway — This Week:
The magic 5 pounds is totally gone. And I’m filled with renewed commitment to lose another magic 5 pounds this week as well (I’m kidding. But I do feel strong.)
I’ve been walking — 19.32 miles this week (it should have been almost 30, but considering this hectic week, I’m going to be proud of this
And finally, last night I thought of a new threat. If I don’t make progress by November 1st then I’m going to re-join Weight Watchers.
Because around here we believe in trying anything that works. And talking about it.

Hooray for magic weight losses to balance out overnight weight gains! Your plan sounds like a good one (the thought of having to work time for weight watchers into my schedule would be quite a motivator for me).
I just wish I could have a magic weight loss…
But since it’s not likely to happen, I walked 23 miles this week (did 5 today already), and lost another pound and a half. Which seems like a lot of work for such a small improvement. Sigh.
Good thing I enjoy walking.
Katiebird, I knew that you’d loose that weight. You walk so much, that gives me an idea. When I actually had a yoga practice, I did a lot of reading. There are mental exercises that you can do while walking that can produce a semi-meditative state and can be very relaxing and rejuvenating. You said that sometimes you have so much on your mind that you can’t even walk, perhaps that could help. It’s kind of fun, and it seems to work.
I started my commitment seriously on Monday and have lost 2 pounds. I’m so happy. And to think that I almost didn’t get on the scale this morning. I’m not getting exercise on any kind of regular basis. I haven’t been feeling too great and have given in to the couch more often than not.
Earlier this month my husband and I had to start receiving rabies vaccine series. 11 shots in a series; last shots were a week ago Tuesday. We know that I at least most assuredly got exposed to rabies… the series is to train your body to attack the live virus with antibodies, and fast. There have been lots of side effects, me more so than hubby. I’ve had a rough month. Anyway, I believe I’m beginning to come out of it, and such as it was, I exercised some and felt better for it.
So I’m in for another week, baby. I’m off to a good start.
Gotta go, but if you’re interested, I’ll look through my books for the how to. Maybe I’ll do that anyway.
Hi, CG. Gee you walk so much and can’t seem to find extra time in your day. You should invent a shoulder harness/ laptop holder so you can powerwalk and compute at the same time.
Don’t slap me, it was a joke. Besides you could get rich with that invention. …or not.
Actually, it sounds like you’re doing fantastic. With all of that walking, you have to be building muscle, and toning… and yet you lost 1 1/2 pounds. Now you know that slow weight loss is the healthiest. (unless you gain 5 lbs overnight, then you’d want it off NOW) Keep it up!
Hi CabinGirl and Nag — you are my inspirations! I’ve had one walk, but probably can’t do another today. But I’m motivated. I by-passed a staff pizza lunch for my regular sandwich and walk!
CabinGirl, you lost 1-1/2 pounds last week too. At this rate you can meet your goal and lose another 50% more besides!
Nag, I’m totally interested in those books. It sounds like exactly what I need. I just hate it when my brain is on overdrive and all I can do is stew. I’ve gotta learn how to shut it off. Or at least crank it down.
Love you both! See you again after work.
Katiebird, that’s one of the nicest things about yoga…it teaches you to let what’s on your mind fall away. And good job on skipping the pizza in favor of a walk!
I’m glad your rabies shots are over, Nag. I hear they are horrendous to have to go through. And congratulations on the 2 pounds!
I honestly think I need to revise my NYE goal to 15 pounds instead of 10, it was that awful when I got on the scale for the first time 2 weeks ago. I’d like to lose 10 by Thanksgiving, so I can fit into my clothes for my work holiday party.
I have given up worrying about weird weight gains. In the past couple of days I appeared to be up as much as five pounds, but when I weighed in at WW this evening, I was down 1.6 lbs. from last week. This has happened many times in the past few months, and yet in every instance, when I weigh in, I’ve actually lost weight compared to the previous weigh-in.
It seems to happen when I drink a lot of fluids combined with not having had a bowel movement lately. So, it’s all there to be reflected on the scale.
What I’m worried about is portion creep. Have to be constantly vigilent ! Also, I forgot this evening and had seconds of cole slaw– something I love.
The main thing is, I have that “official” date with the scale every week and, call it pride, I refuse to EVER have a gain from week to week.
So far, so good !
catdog — What you say about it having a lot to do with what you’ve drunk or timing of bowel movements is true.
We talked about it with the article, My Body is a Rubber Bag. And you can read even more about the whole theory at The Hacker’s Diet site.
And it’s the reason for the Weighted Averages discussion too.
