May 25, 2007 — Just 4 Today

Just 4 Today logoJust 4 Today, I’ll drink my fiber twice (done once), drink 2 liters of water (about 1/2), walk 5 miles (3415 — Yesterday: 5.46), NOT eat between meals & NOT take seconds.

Friday is my official weighing day.  That’s the day I started tracking every single thing in Nutribase, so (even though I weigh myself everyday) this is the day that counts when I track how much I’m losing a week.  And I’ve lost 2.5 pounds this week — 7.5 pounds in the last 2 weeks!  And even The Hacker’s Diet is reporting that I’ve got a calorie deficit of just a little over 1000 calories a day.  I’m hoping I can keep up this 2 pounds a week (or so) pace for the next 6 weeks (that’s when Big Brother starts.)

I know it seems dramatic.  But, I’m tracking everything I eat — and I’m not starving!  I think the fiber helps.  I’m taking my fiber supplement but also eating gallons of vegetables (jammed into my sandwich and at dinner.)

I know I can’t keep this 2-pound-a-week pace going forever.  But I’m enjoying it while it lasts.  Maybe I could weigh 120 pounds by the end of September?

What are you going to do today?

    Morning KB,

J4T I’ll drink 2 liters of water and stay inside. The smoke has come back this morning, so I’ll putter around the house.

    I hope everyone is well.

Although I prefer the Sunday morning WW meeting, I went to the Thursday evening this being a holiday weekend. I missed last Sunday, and didn’t want to let another whole week go by. I, too, weigh myself daily, so I had a pretty good sense of where things are.

In any case, the good news is that I’m down another 0.8 lbs. from the last official weigh-in.

The topic last night was not letting up on your discipline when you’re on vacation– although that’s not exactly the way it was expressed. I didn’t take notes, but what was said was certainly true of what tends to happen when one is on a different schedule. “Forgetting” to log your meals and activities, getting lazy about exercise, giving up when you make a mistake–

It was pointed out that there are 14 weeks to Labor Day, and we were asked what goals we were going to set for that date. Good idea to have a short-term goal, eh ? Yes, I do think so.

So, I walked to work today. A good start for the summer, I think.

Hi FamilyMan — How close are they to stopping those fires? It seems like a month since I first heard about them. Living with all that smoke really sucks (to say nothing of all the destruction it represents)

{{catdog}} Congratulations on the .8 (on my scale that would show up as a pound — I’m pretty sure)

I like the short term goals too. That’s why I came up with 2 summer goals, not just one. And when I go on vacation, I PRAY a lot that I can hang onto my goals.

I am amazed that we both burn 1500 per day, yet you can eat 1000 and not be STARVING. Even when I eat 1200, I am still hungry, but at least I can handle this. Could you give me an average picture of what you eat each day when you are eating your 1000? Maybe you are doing something that I’m not. Here is an approximate list of what I eat on a daily basis:

    1. Breakfast: sprouted grain toast (260 cals)
    2. Snack: frozen berries or pineapple or apple (75 cals)
    3. Lunch: fruit and nuts (350 cals)
    4. Dinner: four ounces lean steak or chicken, one cup of veggies, one cup of carb or tomato sauce or some other side item (450)
    5. Snack: frozen berries or pineapple or apple or veggies (75 cals)

On occasion I’ll interchange a fruit for a small soy latte or a small piece of dark chocolate, but usually my day looks like the above list.

I know the nuts are high calorie and not bulky, but if I don’t have them, I feel off kilter and low energy, which is worse than feeling hungry.

On the days when I’ve tried ONLY eating veggies and fruits, or increasing my amount of veggies, I just feel bloated and unsatisfied.

The above plan is the best I can do – and there are still times during the day when I feel RAGINGLY hungry – despite the fact that I KNOW from using the Hacker’s Diet that it is only a 300 calorie deficit per day.

Are you doing something smarter/different than I am with your food choices that enables you to be full on 1000?

    Hi Bombshell,

I just stumbled onto this — my plan was to eat the 1500 calories and count on walking for the weight loss. Here are some samples:

Sorry — I was hoping to get the editing done before you came back. I had to do some tricky stuff to get them loaded.

Click on the thumbnails to bring up the full image and it can be zoomed for clarity.

Bombshell, I hope I got those thumbnails posted in time for you to see them. And I’m really interested to hear what you think. But, it’s after midnight here and I’ve GOT to go to sleep.

I’ll check back in the morning.

    KB,

Wow. I am genuinely surprised at the differences between my average 1200 calorie day and your 1200 calorie day. For those of you who haven’t been following, KB is FULL on these calories and I am not. Here are the differences:

    1. I eat way more fruits and vegetables than you. [shocked that you would be more full!]
    2. You eat more healthy complex carbs and proteins than I do.
    3. When you do eat a fruit, it is often an apple, which is more filling per calorie than some of the fruits I eat (mango, cherries, etc).
    4. With each meal, you eat a carb AND a protein, instead of eating only one or the other at a time in a series of small snacks.
    5. You appear not to eat too many healthy fats like nuts and avocados.
    6. You take a fiber supplement, I don’t.

I am the type of person that crashes if I don’t have small snacks during the day… I don’t know if I want to switch to only 3 meals. But I can definitely try your system of eating lots of carbs and proteins together. It makes sense that this would keep you full for longer; you burn the carbs first, then the proteins later. Fruits and vegetables are bulky and make your stomach feel full for awhile, but do burn off quickly. Regarding healthy fats (almonds, avocados, etc) – I am certain I would feel ill if I gave them up for too long, but I think I can give them up for a few weeks to see what happens. After all there is no denying the fact that four onces of chicken is WAY more filling than a tiny handful of almonds. The apple things is obvious and something that I should be disciplined about – I just love other more exotic fruits. But thankfully I also like apples and just need to remember to incorporate them more.

The LAST thing – the fiber supplement. I had tried taking hoodia with meals (pure, from a reputable vitamin company) to see if it would make me more full but it DIDN’T. Would a fiber supplement make me more full? I know they put fiber into things like Slimfast bars (which I HATE and never eat but have to admit on the few times I’ve tried them, they make you full for a LONG time). Sorry for the awkward nature of this question, but as a regular person with a normal digestive system, if I took fiber would it make me feel full or would it just make me poop incessantly?

Bombshell, I can’t answer you until this evening — I’ll be working until 6pm tonight, then dinner and walking. So it might be later than usual — maybe 6ish or 7ish your time. Can we talk then?

I’m really interested in talking about the differences and similarities in our diets.

I’m assuming your on the west coast. I should have said I probably can’t get back here until 8 or 9 central time this evening. Sorry.

I’m flattered that you imagined me as a Californian bombshell, but I am on EST. I’m in vacation mode and so I’ll check back periodically, yes, sure, we can talk. Do you want to use MSN Messenger or AIM, or do you want to just post through here?

Hi Bombshell, sorry I’m so late. We had a heavy rain right as I got off work and that delayed our walk.

I actually eat (at least a little) more vegetables than is apparent by those lists. Some of those line-items represent menus & meals and often include vegetables.

But, you’re right — the fruits and vegetables are hard for me (I bought a huge bag of fruit on Sunday though so you’ll be seeing fruit salad show up during the next week — I’ve had fruit with every meal since then!)

I’m willing to be hungry, even “starving” for an hour or so before a meal — but not much longer than that. So, my meals are the result of tracking my meals off and on for years (starting with Weight Watchers quite a while ago.)

The fiber supplement is because I’m so erratic about the fruits and vegetables and I HAVE to have more fiber in my diet. I’m trying to avoid hemorrhoid surgery. Taking Konsyl, has changed my life even more than the weightloss.
