August 24, 2007 — Just 4 Today (Facing Friday’s Fears)

Just 4 Today I'llJust 4 Today, I’ll drink my fiber twice (done once!), drink 2 liters of water (so far, about 1/2 liter), walk 5 miles (yesterday – 5.84), NOT eat between meals & NOT take seconds.

Facing Friday’s Fears

It’s not that I’m BAD on weekends, but I’m just not as focused as I am during the week.  For example, we call our Friday & Saturday night dinners, “Green Plate Specials” and have pizza, burritos and/or tacos or hamburgers and (with whichever we’re eating) salad & baked french fries.  We’ve done this for 15 years or more.

So, I know that there’s nothing inherently bad about those meals — I’ve both lost AND maintained weight while eating those foods.  Taco night (for example) has 400 calories — as long as I stick to 3 oz of french fries.  And THAT’s the catch.

I don’t always take the time to weigh the fries.  And sometimes I nibble on a few as mister finishes the last bits of meal preparation (and THOSE don’t get weighed for sure!) So, I end up not knowing exactly how much I’ve eaten — but I suspect that it’s too much.

So (Just Tonight) I’m not going to eat any fries that I haven’t weighed.

What are you going to do today?

    Morning KB.

J4T I’m going to drink 2 liters of water, that is once I wake back up. I’m going back to sleep.

    Everyone have a good day.

Hey Family Man — it’s starting out well. I hope you stop by again after you wake up!!

KB – I know how you feel about weekends… my hubby always wants to go out to eat. Next weekend he made unexpected plans for us to go out to eat w/ his coworkers. Hubby (who is skinny) also eats a whole bunch of junk if we watch a movie, which I have to resist. I let myself have some low cal treats, etc, but I’ll just be honest, there are many weekends where I don’t lose anything. : )

Bombshell, one thing that helps me is that I have other health issues than just a broken eat watch.

The diabetes gives me a tool with immediate feedback — testing blood sugar.

And I’ve got intestinal problems that I’ve recently (the last 2 months recent) found are (completely?) controlled by not eating fried or very sweet foods or nuts. It’s an amazing thing — problems that have haunted me for 3 years have totally disappeared these last 2 months.

That’s one of the reasons I’m keeping such close tabs (with a very good computer program) on what I eat. I also log those symptoms. Because I want to see what I’ve done that I don’t usually do.

Because those symptoms used to happen EVERY SINGLE DAY. And now they’re gone.

    (pausing after ramble)

I mention it now because it’s changed my attitude toward tempting treats. Now that I know very well the pain they’ll cause — they aren’t nearly as tempting.

And I consider that a blessing. It’s really made life easier for me. Not that I’d wish it on anyone else…..

Those stray french fries DO get weighed–when you step on the scale the next morning. :)

    Happy Friday, everybody.

KB, I just swore off fries almost entirely. I just don’t order or eat them, even if they are served. Only broken this rule maybe a half dozen times over the course of the past 15 months, and then only had a very few.

Side note–I don’t have a food scale, at least not one that I’ve been able to find. I seem to recall having had one some years ago, but I don’t remember every using it ! Hmmm….

    kansas — snort!

catdog, I CANNOT give up the baked french fries! They are the only treatish thing left to me. I just have to learn to control myself.

I use a Weight Watcher’s digital scale, it’s one of the best kitchen tools we have. The other being the Weight Watcher’s measuring gourds.

Please, God — don’t make me give up the baked french fries! I beg of you!

Maybe that’s the problem, if the fries are the ONLY treat you allow yourself. That should be an overstatement, and probably is. But, weigh ‘em if you eat ‘em, if that’s your process.

If you allow yourself, say 6 fries– assuming that’s what it takes to weigh 3 oz.– count them out. By now you probably know how many = 3 oz., right ? So then you don’t have to worry about weighing them, just count them.

And NO SECONDS– or “firsts” if you are eating before the food is “plated.” That’s an important WW rule for most meals– if you don’t “plate it” you don’t eat it.

Well, catdog — it’s not so much a matter of the treats I’m allowing myself as that problem with my gut. It turns out I have a horrible reaction to many of the things I’ve allowed myself to have once in a while (a small piece of birthday cake or a few nuts or a crab cake for example result in something I just can’t talk about here. But, it’s very unpleasant.)

It so happens I like baked french fries and I’d rather not give them up. The whole point of my original post lead to the last sentence: “So (Just Tonight) I’m not going to eat any fries that I haven’t weighed.”

  10. Posted August 24, 2007 at 4:10 pm by catdog | Permalink

Bad reactions to those things aside, there must be some little thing that doesn’t cause that kind of reaction that you could allow yourself once in awhile.

For me, no fries is a lot easier than some fries. One little 60 cal. cup of jello pudding and I’m good. Or a little sugar free jello. Baby carrots with fat free ranch. An apple. These are all treats, to me.

Once in awhile somebody presses a small piece of cake on me. But at this point, I think this is a permanent change in my life, and I don’t think I will ever go back to the way things were.

Somewhat off topic– I saw a friend I hadn’t seen in ages recently. Went to WW with her the first time years ago. She also conned me into Jenny Craig some years ago. Both times I lost weight, she dropped out. We used to run together, but she quit when she moved.

She’s had a HUGE amount of stress in her life, and it’s all been transmuted into weight gain. She weighs over 300 lbs. now, I’m sure. And she still smokes.

I think she was embarrassed to see that I had lost a lot of weight and that she had gained probably twice what I’ve lost since the last time we saw each other.

I’m trying to encourage her, now that one of the major stressors is out of her life, to get back to WW, or do something to lose the weight. I worry about her.

Catdog, Does she live near enough that you could invite her to walk with you now and then? Or maybe you could mention this website as a place to lurk a while. If you have a history of talking about weight issues, it might be more uncomfortable to avoid the issue than to just bring it up.

Heh, weekends are a problem? I’d think normal people (i.e. those who aren’t enslaved to chicken houses) would have more free time on weekends to walk or do other recreational exercise.

It’s always good to find out what foods “do you in,” as they say on this planet. Scallops used to have the effect that I think you were hinting at with crab & b-day cake (the second time I ate them, we didn’t see a cockroach for months… and I’m not kidding), although they no longer do that. I think that once I get a reliable BP gauge, I’ll start logging my food & see what effect different foods have on me.

KB– My friend lives a couple of hundred miles away, just happened to be in town recently.

We did talk a bit about weight issues since she was blown away that I had lost so much. She says she’s going to work on it, but totally rejected any approach that costs anything since finances are tight right now, although I pointed out she could get a discounted rate for WW through her HMO. I’m not sure how she’s going to do on her own. I really think she needs help, as well as motivation, which seems a little weak right now. She did say there is an exercise room at her job, but I’m not sure how much time she would have to use it.

I will encourage her any way I can, but I was totally shocked to see how much she had gained. Of course I used to say things like “shoot me if I get over 150 pounds.”

FAR, (no more hints) I DO get more exercise on weekends, I’m just trying to find a way to control the fries.

catdog, this place is free — maybe she’d get some inspiration listening to the variety of challenges we’re dealing with?

Hi all. Vacations are another tough time to watch what you’re eating, as my current situation suggests.

Hi boran2, I think vacations are like extended weekends and the challenges get more intense the longer it lasts.
