September 24, 2007 — Just 4 Today

24 09 2007

Just 4 Today I'llJust 4 Today, I’ll drink my fiber twice (done once!), drink 2 liters of water (about 1/2), walk 5 miles (yesterday — 1.77), NOT eat between meals & NOT take seconds.

You’d think I’d walk MORE on weekends — but it doesn’t seem to work out like that.  I’m glad to get back to my routines today.

What are you going to do today?

Weekends are for doing the stuff you don’t get done during the week. If you slack off on your walking, don’t beat yourself up – you’ll be back to it today.

I ate everything that couldn’t escape yesterday, and didn’t walk a lick. So it’s back to being good today.

Hi Beth — I’m visualizing the idea of eating everything that couldn’t escape. It might make a fun Disney Movie.

And you’re right that I shouldn’t beat myself up. I walked 35.79 miles last week — which is a bit over my 5 mile per day goal. So, as long as I keep pushing it on the days when I can, I’m doing OK.

And YOU shouldn’t beat yourself up either. I think our appetites vary from day-to-day. We’re just naturally more hungry some days than others. AND I believe, we should listen to those signals.

Eat a little more on those days. And a little less on the others.

Do you have any special rules on the days you’re being good?

Beth

Special rules? Just the normal ones. My metabolism is awful, in spite of everything I do to boost it. So it’s REALLY hard to lose weight. To maintain, I try to stick to 1200 calories/day – no fried foods – no sugars – no white flour – low fats – low bad carbs – etc. etc. I have 10 pounds that won’t go away, and I’m miserable about it. BUT I also beat myself up needlessly, you’re right – I had 4 Hershey’s kisses last night and was mad at myself for falling so far off the wagon. :-) Today I’ll do better, because I’m embarrassed at what I ate yesterday. It’s an endless battle.

Good morning KB and Beth.

J4T I’ll drink 2 liters of water and it’s yard day. I’ve got to wait until later on to get out there, because the grass is still wet. Until then I think I’ll take another nap and plan my day for the yard.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Hey, kib, Beth, and family man! We’ve got to keep meeting like this.

Yo ho!

Beth’s comment reminded me of our old dorm food slogan in college: we’ll eat anything that’s not trying to crawl off the plate, and maybe that too if we’re quick enough with the fork. (Long before Calvin & Hobbes.)

J4T I’ll: drink my water, try to get a walk in at lunch, not obsess over the company stock plummeting (we bought a neighboring company over the weekend), and start approvals on two minor projects.

Heh, I have so much to do on weekends that I end up getting more exercise than at any other time. The down side is that I get no rest when I should be relaxing.

Got the walk in, and one of the two projects to the reviewers.

Y’know, there’s not much free time on weekends. C’mon FAR Future and the four-day week!!!

Did get in about 3 miles yesterday, but I was out of town visiting relatives again and that is always difficult. Older people just tend to eat on a different schedule– and when I say “older” I mean “in their 80’s.”

I find myself always guessing wrong about what’s going to happen in the course of the day, and eating breakfast too late compared to the early main meal time. Then I’m hungry for dinner when they are having a snack, so I end up doing that with them, and then having to have dinner much later than I should. So confusing ! You would think I’d have it figured out by now, but they always manage to fake me out one way or another. Ah well.

Just have to redouble my exercise efforts this week !

Hi Beth, I’m sorry I had to disappear after my question.

Have you tried thinking about calories over a week, rather than a day? Because with all your walks and your daily goals, it sounds like you’re doing pretty well.

Do you write down what you’re eating and walking?

Hi Family Man, I hope the grass dried.

kansas! Fancy meeting you here! How’s things?

OO FAR, I hope things went OK? I’m so glad I don’t have to worry about stock prices. Is it nerve-wracking?

Hi, Boran2, I was so exhausted from the intensity of last week, that I hardly did anything but rest all weekend. And this week seems like it’s going to be even more intense.

I’ve got 2 major projects due Wednesday. And I’m supposed to go to Wichita sometime Friday. If I can figure out how to do it at all.

Yes, FAR — those 3 day weekends sound GOOD to me too. And congratulations on getting your projects to the reviewers!

Catdog, I’ve been thinking about dealing with unpredictability too. It’s part of what I was thinking about in my comment to Beth. I really think that the Weight Watcher’s idea of weekly Points is helpful.

Although for me it’s better to average over the PAST week rather than the future week. Because the past is set and the future, not so much.

Like, if things have been rough for the past week, than JUST 4 TODAY eat more fruit and veg. Or something.

Mostly, trying to keep a grip on today is about all I can do. But, some days that’s easier than others.

24 09 2007

KB– The weekly points thing really does help a lot. The idea that you have extra points to work with over the course of 7 days can be a real life-saver.

For me, though, it’s trying to keep to the 18 points a day and not over-do it with the 35 weekly points. Of course once in awhile things will happen and you go “over-budget.” But, if the difference in points over-budget consumed isn’t made up in exercise, you’re going to have a problem. OTOH, however, you don’t want to get into the sort of modified binge-purge of what amounts to excessive exercise. It can be a not-so fine line with some of us obsessive personalities.

And it doesn’t help when you’re short of sleep, which I almost always am when I travel. The hormones are always out of whack when you don’t get enough sleep, so you metabolize your food differently, and badly so.

So, the new WW monthly card came in the mail today. I’m going to have to get over there and use it tomorrow, and deal with whatever happened the last 4 days. I’m probably worrying about something that doesn’t amount to much, if anything, but you know how it can be.

Meanwhile, I have 4 over-ripe bananas to convert into something that fits into the program. Any ideas ?

katiebird

4 over-ripe bananas is a lot. If you can’t eat banana bread. Can you? Maybe take it to work?

Otherwise, maybe smoothies? But, I’ve never had one, so I don’t know if they have bananas or not.

That obsessive-compulsive walking is something that gets me. But the fact is, it’s easy to lose weight fast when you wrack up the miles. And it’s not so easy for slugs like me when I don’t.

I’m looking forward to walking just 3 miles a day once I’ve lost all the weight I want to lose.

I’m always impressed that you can stay so focused with all the travel you’re doing.

Goggle recipes is amazing– I have found over 300 banana muffin recipes ! I think maybe something with yogurt for one of them, like a smoothie, perhaps. And maybe some banana bread or muffins made with Splenda for a couple more– one recipe noted that its muffins freeze well.

But that’s one of the hazards of going out of town after doing a big grocery shopping trip, isn’t it ?

As to staying focused, well, what are the choices ? Either I stay focused, or I start gaining weight again– AND I WILL NOT GO BACK !

For one thing, I would have nothing to wear. I’ve made sure of that !

24 09 2007
katiebird

:) Me too (the clothes) and I agree about I WILL NOT GO BACK. But, I know from last year just how close I came to letting go.

Beth

Sorry I disappeared – I got busy writing and forgot to check back! I like the idea of a weekly calorie count – never heard of that before. It’d be a lot easier than daily!

I throw my overripe bananas in the freezer, then they’re there for smoothies when you want one.

No, I don’t write down what I eat, and I should do that, too. I keep a running total of calories in my head, but maybe I’ll try writing them down. Sitting on the couch writing all day makes it tough to get much exercise, except Curves and walking on the treadmill. I miss those miles that you put on in the course of a day.

Thanks for the support and advice!!

Beth, the great thing about an online support group is that the support is there 24 hours a day — even when some of the participants have gone to bed!

I got caught up in work stuff and didn’t post my comments until pretty late in the day myself. I’m glad you got a lot of writing done.

And that’s a GREAT idea, to put over-ripe bananas in the freezer! That way they can be used when WE’RE ready — not just ’cause THEY’RE ready!

Thanks.

You just have to get used to having black bananas in your freezer…:-)

Hope your projects go well this week, kb. Thanks for the support! Hugs.

Thanks Beth — I just got my post up and I’m off to visit around the village real quick before I run off to work.

Hugs back!
