October 16, 2007 — Just 4 Today

Just 4 Today I'llJust 4 Today, I’ll drink my fiber twice (done once!), drink 2 liters of water (about 1/2), walk 5 miles (yesterday — 3.9), NOT eat between meals & NOT take seconds?

When I got home from work yesterday, mister had vacuumed the whole house, put a box over my end of the couch to keep Archie (the dog) off AND made a huge pot of chicken soup & bread sticks for dinner. I’m happy to say that thanks to your kind wishes & words and his efforts (and a good night’s sleep,) I feel much better.

Explaining 3415

I haven’t mentioned 3415 lately — The idea of taking 3 15-minute walks a day. I do it everyday now (even days like yesterday when I don’t really think of myself as walking.) The thing is — it’s a good thing to get up and move around a few times a day. So, I try to get up in the morning, midday & afternoon (at least) to walk around the block. It takes about 15 minutes and adds up to about 1 mile each time.

3415 — it’s just a reminder that walking 3 miles a day doesn’t have to be an overwhelming goal.

What are you going to do today?

Are you a mindreader, kb? I looked at that this morning and thought, what the heck is that? I tried to click on it but nothing happened. Then my easily-distracted mind moved on to something else. Thanks for the explanation! It’s a great idea – would get me off the couch.

I’m glad you’re feeling better – your mister sounds like a keeper. Lucky you!!!

I think I’m just doomed to be hungry today – first Panera, now soup and breadsticks. I’ll go chew on a piece of celery and pretend it’s something decadent.

    Have a great day -

    Good morning KB and Beth.

Hooray for Mister and I’m glad you’re feeling better. I’m just getting over a short migraine. I had to take a trip to the doctor’s office yesterday because I couldn’t keep any migraine medicine down. I had to sit in the waiting room around screaming kids for a couple of hours because the check in clerk somehow forgot to put my chart in the back. I’m feeling fine today, but a little worn out.

J4T I’ll drink 2 liters of water and since my brother and nephew did the lawn, I’ll take it easy today.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Boy, you’ve earned a slackerly day, even if the lawn hadn’t been mowed! What a day. Sorry about the kids and the migraine – you deserve a couple of days on the couch!

Actually, Beth — I’ve just been looking at this place with fresh eyes, trying to see if the things that SHOULD be visible and handy are (they aren’t.)

You’re right that the 3415 icon should lead someplace. That it doesn’t is a failure of my template. Because it actually requires that I write a bit of programming code to make it a link. AND I’ve got to make a page for it to point to.

I’m playing around with a new template, but it might be the first of the year before I have it ready to go. In the meantime, I’ll try to highlight some of the treats lurking in the sidebar!

{{Oh FamilyMan}} We were talking to an elderly couple in the waiting room when mister was there for his stress test. They’d been waiting for nearly 2 hours! So we were sitting and talking and all of a sudden mister started reading a sign outloud — “If you’ve been waiting more than 20 minutes, please let us know” It was hiding behind a potted plant up by the sign-in desk.

So, the man (the son of the woman) got up and told them. He got a sort of snippy response, but they brought them back right away. He told me later that the nurse in the back had been calling their house — it was just like you said, his mom’s chart hadn’t been pulled and no one even knew they were there!

It makes me wonder about all those times I’ve spent hours patiently waiting for a doctor….

Did they find new medication for you? Or why you couldn’t keep the stuff down?

I HATE noisy/frantic waiting rooms when I’m sick.

No worries, katie. Since I’m pretty new to your site, I just figured it was something I missed earlier. I’m slow on the uptake sometimes – tunnel vision. But now I know. Now if I could just get OFF the couch…. :-)

  7. Posted October 16, 2007 at 9:37 am | Permalink

But that’s the thing, Beth — there are a lot of new people finding this site all the time (many, many people don’t post comments at all)

And they (you) shouldn’t have to ask what/where information is. It should be pretty obvious.

So, I guess I’m saying (to Everyone Reading) that if you’re wondering about something and don’t want to make a public comment, PLEASE use the Contact Me form and I promise to address your question.

Now. Get off the Couch! :)

  8. Posted October 16, 2007 at 9:39 am | Permalink

I see your point. From now on I’ll ask. :-)

I really can’t complain to much. Whenever I go there for a migraine, I’m a walk in and in reality it is much faster than going to an emergency room. I’d much rather have to wait for my doctor who knows what going on, then to see an e/r physician who thinks I just have a headache, and I’m over reacting.

I just said over at Beth’s place that when you get as many migraines as I do, a short one is almost a blessing.

All I can say, “THANK HEAVENS THE SUN IS OUT !”

I really don’t like using overhead lighting in an office with 2 window walls, which is what we had to do all day yesterday, it was soooo dark outside.

Re: walking– something I haven’t been doing enough of lately, that’s for sure. I’ve tried to make up for it by at least standing as much as I can.

Last night we went to a book signing which was wonderful. If you’ve never read a Walter Mosley novel– he wrote “Devil in a Blue Dress”– you’re really missing out. Mosley is very funny and very insightful.

So glad I called and reserved a copy of the book, “Blond Faith,” as they sold out. There were at least a couple of hundred people there, many of whom brought other books of his to be signed– which he did. (I saw one woman who must have had every book he ever wrote– 32, I think– in a shopping bag, asking for signatures.)

This is the last of the Easy Rawlins mysteries, Mosley says, so don’t miss it !

OH, and I stood up for about an hour, in lieu of walking.

Good morning! I’m halfway through the first cup of green tea, trying to jolt myself awake. I must be exhausted from chasing the bouncy-ball wielding dog last night.

[Note to Far: Bud is a basset hound. I'm lucky if he wakes up long enough to greet me at the door. :) ]

J4T I will drink at least two liters of water (in addition to the necessary intake of caffeine), not snack between meals, be conscious of the nutritional value of my meals and prep myself for better decisions starting with each new sitting. Tonight I will go for a walk or jog instead of the bouncy-ball olympics, in honor of the 3415 badge. Have a great day, everyone!

Green Tea pill – check; Vitamin C – check; Fish oil – check; aspirin – check; Centrum Senior – check (even though I’m not senior yet); M&Ms – check; 500 words written before sunrise – check; okra, tomatoes, peppers, bok choi, lettuce, last cucumber all picked – check; walk – well, maybe later. Sometimes it is hard to remember how I ran marathons in my yute, but I’m thinking it’s time to get serious about things in my life, but I’m just having too much fun. I’ll walk when the sun goes down. It spooks the deer. Y’all have a great day.

Hey rick ! Are you warming up for National Novel Writing Month ? (www.nanowrimo.org)

This year, I’m really going to do it !

  15. Posted October 16, 2007 at 12:11 pm | Permalink

Yep, am warming up for NANO. Getting my hair cut, mailing out all of November bday cards, cutting the grass, locking the door, frozen meals made, etc.

    Now, where is that plot?

  16. Posted October 16, 2007 at 12:15 pm | Permalink

Wow, am I late to the party or what?

I started some black beans & tomatoes & mushrooms in the crockpot, ended up adding a little garlic, a jalapeno, and a dash of hot sauce. As it got close to noon, I threw in a can of tuna then (just before chow time) a pack of ramen (minus the Sodium Packet of Dooooom! — well, I added 1/4 tsp of it). It turned out pretty darn good, not bland and the ramen absorbed most of the broth.

OK… ate lunch, took the fiber, about halfway through my 2L of water. Time for a walk.

Catdog, good luck with NaNoWriMo! I would really love to do it, but I’d pretty much have to shut myself away from my family for the entire month of November… which would suck because my birthday is almost always during T’giving weekend.

No plot ? No problem ! Right ?

Should be fun this year. I was really inspired by Walter Mosley last night. He is a hoot, if you ever get a chance to go to a signing of his stuff, do so !

I shouldn’t forget FM… glad to hear you’re feeling better, but not so glad to hear you weren’t feeling better in the first place. Short migraines are better than long ones, I’m sure….

Hey, at least you don’t have to worry about the lawn, and George might be quiet for a while.

Glad you’re better, KB. Short walks sounds like a great idea. I may have to try that.

Unfortunately no walking today but I did drink plenty of water.

KB– National Novel Writing Month is aka “nanowrimo”– During the month of November we challenge ourselves to write 50,000 words.

You start right after midnight 10/31-11/1 and must lay down the pen, or back away from the keyboard, at the stroke of midnight 11/30.

Those who have completed 50,000 words are considered “winners”– even if the words are not in final form or publishable in the condition they are in at the end of the month.

The idea is to just do it and see what you have to work with, clean up, and maybe, who knows, get published.

There is also a kids’ version. Check out nanowrimo.org for details and a lot of fun. Local participants all over the world get together for kick-off parties, too. The one here in Los Angeles will be at The Brewery on 11/27. See the website for more information.

    It’s free, it’s fun, why not ?

Oh, and the motto is “No plot ? No problem !” which is also the name of a book which can help you get started.

  23. Posted October 16, 2007 at 9:29 pm | Permalink

It sounds CRAZY! 50,000 Words in a Month? Fiction words? Wow.

Do people try it more than once? How many pages is 50,000 words?

  24. catdog
    Posted October 17, 2007 at 12:16 am | Permalink

kb– I first signed up in 2002, so, yes, people do it more than once. Some do it every year.

It’s only about 1700 words a day. That’s roughly 5 pages of 12 point type, double spaced. That means about 150 pages when you’re done.

Remember, it’s not finished product, just raw words. After November, you can set it aside for awhile, then go back to it, if you’re so inclined, to clean it up and make something readable out of it.

And some people actually have had their work published. Others have used the Nanowrimo product to start a longer, more formal work that takes a lot longer to complete.

But the initial product doesn’t even have to make sense ! The idea is to prime the pump. You would probably be amazed at how much stuff is just under the mental surface, ready to spill out.

Keep it in mind, check it out. If not this year, maybe next year.

It sounds interesting, catdog — and I see how it could work. It relates to kansas’s post this morning. Sort of.

I’d be interested in a NonFiction version of the contest — see how many posts I could crank out in a month!
