November 21, 2007 — Just 4 Today

Just 4 Today I'llJust 4 Today, I’ll drink my fiber twice (done once), drink 2 liters of water (I’ve drunk about 1/2 liter), walk 5 miles (yesterday 1.25), NOT eat between meals & NOT take seconds.

YIKES! I spent the morning gabbing (http://sweetmysteryoflife.blogspot.com/2007/11/big-fat-and-juicy-2.html) and then ran off to have lunch with my parents.  I just spent 2 hours showing my mom how to use her new laptop.  She’s never had her own computer.  She’s always hated computers (and if I told you that my dad has been a computer programmer since 1952, you might have a tiny glimmer of how passionately she hates them.)  But, she’s decided that she wants to read the New York Times online — and that requires a computer.

It was a FUN two hours!

What are you going to do today?

Hi KB. Happy computing and have a great Thanksgiving! (I tried to teach my mom once. Once was enough.)

Although my mother just had a cataract removed last week (yes– they’ve decided she’s not going to die, for now, so they went ahead and did the surgery) I don’t think she’s likely to start using the computer, even though her vision is now better than mine. She is reading the newspaper and Barbara Tuchman now !

My father has a desktop computer, set with the screen readable for the visually impaired, which he is due to macular degeneration, but I don’t know that she’s ever looked at it.

My father, OTOH, seems to be very engaged, and even buying stuff in bidding wars on eBay.

Now if I can just teach him to stop adding garbage programs into his system…

    Hi Boran & catdog!

Catdog, what settings does your dad use for his vision problem. My Mother-in-Law has recently been diagnosed with macular degeneration and she really misses reading. And she’s not very engaged in anything lately.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated!
