November 26, 2007 — Just 4 Today

Just 4 Today I'llJust 4 Today, I’ll drink my fiber twice (done once), drink 2 liters of water (I’ve drunk about 1/2 liter), walk 5 miles (yesterday 2.83), NOT eat between meals & NOT take seconds.

I REALLY didn’t want to get up this morning.  After a 5-day break, I’m used to doing what I want (not much) when I want (all the time.)   Still, now that I’m awake, I’m glad to be back in my routine.  I WILL walk 5 miles today (or more.)

3415: Does anyone want to join me?

What are you going to do today?

Morning, kb! I probably should, but I’m still feeling pretty wimpy. Don’t really have the energy to do much than sit on the couch and work. Although it’s 68 and sunny outside, and just gorgeous. I might walk next door to the supermarket later, and see how that works. Enjoy your 3415, though! And Friday will be here before you know it.

Back to the routine, I hope. I didn’t do too badly over the past 4 days with the eating, and I did catch up on sleep, pretty much. As much as one ever does with a 16 year old cat in the house, I guess.

Today looks like a wonderful day for a long walk.

!! Catdog!! you’re the first person to get in for hours! The site’s been down since mid morning at least.

I’m trying to get back in my routine too. I broke down yesterday and had some eggnog. I hope being at work puts a stop to that!

I’ve already walked twice and logged 2.5 miles. So I’m back on track there too.

    It’s great to see you!

    Afternoon KB.

Yep I had been trying to get on this morning but had no luck. Glad to see you’re back up and running.

Today I’m taking it easy. I know it’s hard to believe I can take it easier than usual, but I’ve got a bad crick in my neck. Haven’t been able to straighten my head all morning. Thank goodness for heating pads.

Ouch, FM! Maybe a trip to the chiro-cracker?

It’s raining here, so if I get a walk in this afternoon, it will be on a treadmill. But I saw a guy outside, turning from the sidewalk onto the office driveway, carrying a large umbrella. Now that’s being dedicated to one’s walk!

Tonight it’s supper at Osaka, a local version of Benihana, for a b-day dinner.

Didn’t know there was a problem this a.m. I got right in.

Just read this and thought it was interesting:

For one study, Supriya Krishnan of the Boston University School of Public Health and colleagues studied more than 40,000 U.S. black women who filled out regular questionnaires every two years starting in 1995.

Over eight years, 1,938 of the women developed type 2 diabetes. The women who ate the most foods with a high glycemic index had a higher risk of diabetes.

But those who ate more fiber from whole grains had a lower risk. “Our results indicate that black women can reduce their risk of diabetes by eating a diet that is high in cereal fiber,” Krishnan’s team wrote.

Women who ate 5.9 grams of fiber a day or more had an 18 percent reduced risk of diabetes compared to the rest of the women, the researchers said.

“Incorporating fiber sources into the diet is relatively easy,” they added.

“A simple change from white bread to whole wheat bread or substituting a cup of raisin bran or oatmeal for a cup of corn Chex or rice Chex will move a person from a low fiber intake category to a moderate intake category, with a corresponding 10 percent reduction in risk.”

Plus, such whole grain foods have magnesium. which can lower blood pressure, they added.

For the second study, Raquel Villegas of Vanderbilt University in Nashville and colleagues followed a group of 64,000 Chinese women for an average of five years, interviewing them regularly about diet and other habits.

During the study, 1,608 of the women developed diabetes. Women who consumed more carbohydrates such as rice were more likely to develop diabetes.

Women who ate the most carbohydrates had a 28 percent higher risk of diabetes than the women who ate the least — and those who ate the most bread, noodles and rice were 78 percent more likely to develop diabetes than those who ate the fewest carbs.

“Given that a large part of the world’s population consumes rice and carbohydrates as the mainstay of their diets, these prospective data linking intake of refined carbohydrates to increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus may have substantial implications for public health,” Villegas and colleagues wrote.
