I’m reeling from the shock: Aldi’s Stollen has nearly 500 calories in a 1/2-inch slice. And I’ve been nibbling on this stuff since Thursday. After reading the rest of the ingredients, I’m pretty sure Stollen is just a little flour mixed with several pounds of butter, topped off with a few almonds. I guess I should have known: It’s actually called Butter-Almond Stollen.
What a treat. (snort)
The thing about writing down what you eat is that you actually think about what you eat when you do it. Or you think about it the next day when you actually sit down to enter it. Either way, it’s a powerful lesson. Perhaps a little more powerful after actually eaten most of the loaf. . . .
Don’t get me wrong, I’m NOT beating up on myself for eating the Stollen. I’ve been through this process enough to know that this first week or so will be full of such discoveries — especially since THIS time, I’m getting back on the Nutrition Wagon at the height of the Eating Season.
Have you started keeping a journal of your meals? What’s the most surprising (or shocking) thing you’ve discovered?
