The Hacker’s Diet :: Hacking ourselves

I just want to say a quick word about the Hacker’s Diet.  The author is an engineer who developed the diet after a life-long struggle with his weight resulted in the brilliant flash that if he could “hack” code — he could “hack” his body:

I first wrote about The Hacker’s Diet in 2006 quoting this bit:

This book isn’t written for people who are or wish to become obsessed with their health. I consider weight control and fitness like any other aspect of life that’s important enough to do, but hardly my reason for being. It’s like balancing the checkbook, going grocery shopping, or getting the car tuned up. The goal is to get the job done, and done right, as quickly as possible and with the minimum effort.

His idea was that we should have an “Eat Watch” — a tool that we could consult as easily as looking at a watch to let us know if it’s time to eat or not. Here’s a piece that I quoted in my post, My Eat Watch is Busted, explaining the concept:

You strap it on your wrist, set it for the weight you want to be, then rely on it to tell you when to eat and when to stop. Whenever it says EAT, just chow down on anything you like until EAT goes out. Obviously the EAT indicator will stay on longer if you’re munchin’ cabbage instead of chugging München’s finest beer.

(snip)

The eat watch wouldn’t control you any more than a regular watch makes you get to work on time. You can ignore either, if you wish. You decide, based on the information from the watch, what to do.

Some people are born with a natural, built-in eat watch. You and I either don’t have one, or else it’s busted. But instead of moping about bemoaning our limitations, why not get an eat watch and be done with it?

The Hacker’s Diet has never been published in paper form.  It’s just out there on the web for us to print off ourselves or consult (as I do) online.  I’m going to post something about it every day – for a while at least – and I’d love to talk about it.  But, we can also use these threads to talk about the ideas you are finding in the Diet Books you’re reading.

Together, let’s Hack Ourselves!

Monday, Git ‘er Done!

Just 4 Today, I’m NOT going to eat between meals and I’m NOT going to take seconds. AND I’ll walk at least 3 miles, drink my fiber supplement & drink 2 liters of water.

(I’m back to thinking about Diet Books) My dad is always working on a million projects (which now that I think about it probably doesn’t make it easy to finish any of them) and he has the idea that if a book has even ONE good or useful idea then it’s worth having. I can’t quite imagine buying all the diet books with just one good idea — the expense and storage would be incredible but, I DO see what he means.  When I’m working on a challenging project any help I can get is great!

Looking outside it feels like we’ve been sent back a month — the streets and sidewalks are totally covered in snow again. Mall walking is fine for me but, my little dog is jumping out of his skin.  Tommy doesn’t get what’s going on at all and somewhere around 2 or 3pm he starts pacing around like a caged animal (instead of the pampered-pet he actually is.) I know that pets all over are going through this — but, I feel so sorry for them! We let Tommy run around on that trolly you can see running through the yard.  But, it isn’t the same for him at all.  He LOVES walking in the cold weather.   I just can’t imagine letting him walk through the snow for 2 or more miles.

So, it’s back to the Ghost-Mall for me!  Whatever it takes to Git ‘er Done!

What are you going to do today?

Sunday – Thinking about “Diets”

I’m not going to eat between meals and I’m not going to take seconds. And I’m going to walk at least 3 miles, take my fiber supplement and drink 2 liters of water.

Eat4Today isn’t really focused on any formal weight-loss “Diet” but since so many of (my) health issues are related to my semi-chronic weight problems I do talk about Diet Books every so often. I already know from the comments that in addition to my interest in The Hacker’s Diet, we have readers following the Flat-Belly Diet, The Mediterranean Diet and I’m sure there are other references that I’m overlooking.

I love to read diet books

Mostly I don’t care about the actual diets — it’s those inspirational chapters at the beginning that I like.  I love to read about how other people get themselves wound up to (finally) focus on their health.  Even if the actual diet is crap, the trip is always new & interesting and there’s always something new to think about.

It turns out for me that’s one of the fun things about Eat4Today.  The comments here inspire me in the exact same way as the diet books.  But, with even more power — our conversations weave a thread of inspiration throughout the day.

Saturday – Drawing a Line in the Sand

I’m not going to eat between meals and I’m not going to take seconds. And I’ll walk at least 3 miles, take my fiber supplement and drink 2 liters of water.

[ Here's what I was talking about yesterday, for me Saturday's are weird.  And always weird in the different ways.  Maybe it's because I stayed up so late unwinding from the excitement of the Olympic Opening Ceremonies - or maybe it's because I'm just lazy but, I slept REALLY late today. ]

Drawing a Line in the Sand

I want to take today to say that a week ago I was feeling a mental edginess that always means that I’m on the wrong track.  I’d been feeling it for a while but, last Saturday it felt a little more urgent.  Like something was saying LISTEN to me — I’m not going to keep bugging you forever.

And I know THAT warning was serious.  Because there have been times in my life where I let the moment pass and the next thing I know, a decade has passed. That warning was real — As a 10+ years diabetic in my mid-fifties, I don’t HAVE a decade to play around.

Today feels totally different. Rather than letting that moment drift past me I renovated this blog.  I spent time considering how it should look – What it should be able to do – it (the underlying code) should work. I actually dreamt about it.

And I invited my friends to share it with me. Together we’ve talked and walked and counseled and consoled.  We’re already making progress!

Oh — and that mental edginess? It’s totally gone.

Thank you for coming – for sharing your situations and goals . . . for drawing a line in the sand with me.

Brief thought about the Olympic Opening Ceremonies

WHY did they time-delay the ceremonies for the mountain & west coasters?  What kind of a sucky idea is that?  Those people LIVE in the same part of the world as Vancouver.  Some of them were just a couple of miles away from the city (in Northern Washington) . . .

For me one of the pleasures of the Olympics was that we all watched events as they happened.  Maybe we had to get up in the middle of the night or bring our TVs into work — it was all part of the fun.

That faded away as NBC started compiling Highlights from the Olympics, showing them only in primetime.  So, I guess it’s to be expected.  But, it’s gotta suck for my west coast friends.  I’m sorry.
