June 14, 2008 — Just 4 Today
Just today, I’m not going to eat between meals and I’m not going to take seconds. And I’ll weigh myself and use Nutribase and the tools of The Hacker’s Diet to help me reach (and keep) my goals.
And Just 4 Today, I’ll drink my fiber twice (done once), drink 2 liters of water (I’ve drunk about 1/2 liter), walk 2 miles (which I did yesterday!), NOT eat between meals & NOT take seconds.
What are you going to do today?

Hey! Fattie: Eat just a little less why don't you?
If you haven’t fought it you can’t imagine the endless struggle against obesity. For me it’s like something just shuts off and I actually reject concern about my weight or health. When that little window opens I don’t care about my future. Clothes? They’ll aways fit.
I’ve been thinking about my reflection in windows though. There are few things so disheartening for a person who has struggled to lose fifty or more pounds than to catch sight of our reflection in a store-front window and discover that ALL our weight is back. It seems impossible How can that happen?
It happens because obesity is an incurable disease that goes undercover when our weight is controlled. But that doesn’t mean it’s gone. (nodding) It’s there. It will always be there. And sure, we all no that food has calories and if we eat more calories than we use, those calories will be converted to fat. So what? Continue reading

May 30, 2007 — Just 4 Today
Just 4 Today, I’ll drink my fiber twice (done it once), drink 2 liters of water (about 1/2), walk 5 miles (3415 — Yesterday 6.8 miles ), NOT eat between meals & NOT take seconds.
It was POURING rain when I woke up. But, it’s been like this for most of the week. If I keep my eyes open, I should be able to do my 3 walks. And WOW all this walking (regular, steady walking — nothing fancy) is doing it’s job. As of this morning, I’ve lost 9 pounds in less than 3 weeks!
Katiebird’s secret to Fast Weight Loss
Actually, obviously cutting way back on food — and consistently measuring my portions is important too. But if I was going to label 2 3 things as “my secret” to fast weight loss (which isn’t what everyone wants) it would be:
- Drink 2 liters of water steadily through the day (don’t guzzle it in bursts; drink a cup or so every hour to keep up with the goal.) I think drinking water regularly through the day flushes some extra calories out of our system before they get converted to fat. Or maybe it just keeps us peeing so regularly we’re keeping the rubber bag empty. Either way, it gives a nice boost to the weight-loss-ego.
- Walk an average of 6 miles a day. Do your 3 for 15 (this is for life, not weight loss) and then walk for 1 hour more (this is your weight loss booster shot.)
- Walk for even a few minutes (if you can) after every meal. I’ve been reading (here and there, I’ll have to find the links later) that they think we burn the calories we just ate first. So if we walk right after eating we don’t give the calories a chance to land anywhere (and that regular water drinking would help flush them out at the same time)
This could be hooey: I don’t have any scientific evidence to back this up. But, I know that when I don’t follow these 3 rules, I don’t lose weight as fast — if at all.
What are you going to do today? What are your weight-loss secrets?

April 16, 2007 — Just 4 Today
Just 4 Today, I’ll drink my fiber twice (once!!!), drink 2 liters of water (1/3 so far), walk 3 miles (I did it yesterday: 3415), NOT eat between meals & NOT take seconds.
Looking at my situation from the dark-side, I’m not doing so well — I’ve been wanting to lose more weight, and I haven’t. It’s like I’m stuck. And not only that, I feel like I’m barely hanging on to the place I’m at by my fingernails . . . . When I think about this, the world seems dark and sad.
But, I can look at it from the light-side too — I’ve been weighing myself everyday. So I know that my weight is staying steady. Hanging on by my fingernails means that I haven’t gained any weight at all in months (I’m pretty sure the weight gain is totally attributable to my illicit snacks from the bakery).
It’s having this place with friends to share their ideas and progress. And a place to think through ideas. And writing them down here makes them more real and serious, I think. All this has made a huge difference.
I keep thinking about Hitting The Wall….
What are you going to do today?

The BMI and I
Today at WW I verified the loss of another 0.8 lbs. This means that I am continuing on my steady half pound a week weight loss pattern. Because of medical issues, the doctor really doesn’t want my weight going down any faster than that– although I would be pretty happy myself. But, for me, too rapid weight loss can trigger pancreatitis, a very painful and even potentially deadly condition which rivals both back labor in childbirth and sciatica on my own personal “OMG !!!! Scale” of physical discomfort.
But I digress…. as previously noted, this rate of loss has been consistent since Thanksgiving last year, making my goal weight well within view at this point.
Today, for the amusement value, I decided to check my BMI against the new number on the scale. A few weeks back I realized that I am, in fact, inching closer and closer to a “normal” BMI, something I haven’t experienced in 15-20 years.
Wonder of wonders, it turns out I am 10 pounds from that particular goal !
Of course, were I excising more than I have been, more of my body mass would be muscle than it presently is, so at least theoretically, I could be my present weight and have a body fat percentage in an entirely acceptable range.
But I’m not exercising enough, so that is not the case, thus I cannot rationalize away those 10 pounds. I must get to work on that 3415 part of our daily commitment.
And stay away from the Easter candy !
