Weight Watchers and The 3 phases of weight control

I’ve said it a million times and I’m going to keep saying it until I start hearing it said casually on television and in commercials and on the street when I’m standing at the corner:

Obesity is incurable. But it can be controlled.

And contolling obesity takes 3 steps (not 2):

  1. Begin a “diet”
  2. Lose Weight
  3. Maintain goal weight

Most of our lives should be spent at step 3. But for some reason we are obsessed with the first two steps. We’re experts at them. And we know almost nothing about being successful at step 3. [More] Continue reading

Eat 4 Today – The Commitment. Rocket Fuel for the Commercial Weight Loss Plans

I’m not eating between meals and I’m not taking seconds. Just Today. And I’m going to try this for a year to see what happens.

Some of us may be members of a Commercial Weight Loss organization. And according to at least one popular consumer organization, you can successfully lose weight by following those programs. I’ve talked about my experience with Weight Watchers and how I’ve lost quite a bit of weight by following their plan. I’ve been Eating 4 Today for almost 8 months and I’ve lost a lot of weight. And mostly things go pretty smoothly for me at this point. I’ve got a routine and I’m happy sticking to it. But I’ve been here before. Continue reading

My Love/Hate Relationship with Weight Watchers. Pt. 6 – It’s a Corporation

With all the touchy-feely friendliness of a Weight Watchers meeting, it’s easy to forget that it isn’t a club, it’s a corporation. It’s not staffed by well meaning volunteers, it’s staffed by employees. Ultimately, it isn’t our wellbeing that interests the corporate entity, Weight Watchers. That’s not their primary interest at all. Continue reading

My Love/Hate Relationship with Weight Watchers. Pt. 5 – What’s a lifetime membership worth?

I was totally into the Weight Watcher’s thing that last time I joined. I was looking through my Weight Watchers kit at it’s filled with little notes, goals — quotes from the ‘Leader’ — ideas to make Weight Watchers even more successful. I remember a conversation I had with my sister where I described one idea to make it work as a permanent weight control solution.

(I didn’t realize that this was the beginning of the end of my association with them.)
