Trial and error

I’ve given a lot more thought to walking since I retired than I would have thought possible. The problem is a clash-of-intent. Mister likes to walk with me (and I with him) but, he doesn’t like to walk as OFTEN as I do. He likes us to take the dog (and I do too) but, we don’t want the poor little guy to collapse from exhaustion. Mister’s goal is to walk aerobically for 30 minutes but mine is to walk 5-8 miles a day.

Combine all those goals with the fact that I’m spending hours and hours everyday at my parent’s house and I’m trying to spend as much hanging out & helping Mister at our own house and finding a workable routine has had me stumped.

It’s really had me worried. But, I’ve been trying a new routine this week and I think it’s going to work perfectly:

When I get to my parent’s house in the morning I say a quick hello and take off for a walk. When I get back I work on their housework for an hour or two. Then I take another walk. When I get back, I work on Dad’s project for 3 or 4 hours. Go home (eat lunch) and whenever Mister wants, we take another walk with the dog. Then in the summer we can add an evening walk.

So far the morning walks have been a mile each and the afternoon walk is a little over 2. But, if I tinker with my route, I can make them all in the 2 mile range. And with a little commitment, even a lunkhead like me can figure out a simple problem….

Committing? Again . . . .

Time flies when you don’t look at it closely. Doesn’t it?

I’ve been spending most days at my parent’s house. Cleaning their house in the morning and working on stuff with my dad in the afternoon. Then I come home, take a walk with mister and the dog (Tommy), help with dinner & the dishes and wow — it’s time for bed! Somewhere in that my focus and commitment to Eat4Today slide away.

What a mistake.

Things happen when I lose my focus. Things like getting up and eating crackers and dip while completely forgetting that I’m working on a post. A post about getting a grip. Commitment.

Well, that’s changing folks. I’m BACK!

What about you? How have things been going for you lately?

Monday, Getting a Plan

My plan to become slender and willowy and alluring is not working out and the reason seems to be that though I go for days and days eating only celery and RyKrisp and a soup made from birch twigs and lichen, I black out occasionally and when I regain consciousness I am crouched over the half-eaten carcass of a gazelle and my hands and face are red and sticky and I’m disgusted, of course, and yet very rare gazelle does taste good when you’re hungry, and the exertion of chasing one and bringing it down does make a person ravenous.

- Garrison Keillor, A Puritan’s Path To Weight Loss and Eternal Happiness

I spent the weekend cleaning closets and trying to distract myself from the attractive treats calling me from the kitchen. Aside from the occasional lapse (where I’d duck into the refrigerator for a slice of cheese) the weekend was mostly successful. The closets are clean and the treats are (mostly) still there. It's Grand Opening Day!

Welcome one, welcome ALL!

Eat4Today is almost 2-1/2 years old, growing out of my commitment to getting a grip on my weight as a way to get a grip on my blood sugar levels. And my inability to refrain from babbling about the process on other people’s blogs. (HEY! katiebird, get a blog of your own!) So I got a blog of my own.

As our tagline states, this is “a place to discuss food and eating and the state of the world.” And a careful parsing will reveal that virtually nothing is off topic here. Still, most conversations revolve around health issues. You might want to avoid the place on Oscar night though…..

Each day around here begins with my goals for the day. And everyone is encouraged to post their goals in the comments. When things get going (and summer is the slow season, so don’t be surprised if they don’t get going for a while) there’s some good supportive conversation about HOW to stick to the goals. And it can be a bit of an open thread.

We also like to talk about the process of making/keeping/reaching goals. Some of the steps involved are A Vision, a Plan, a Commitment, an Affirmation and Action. Oh, and whining. Every successful strategy to get a grip on health involves these concepts. I think.

I can’t tell you how happy I am to be back in business. These last few weeks (months) have been a miserable struggle. But this nice shiny room has perked me right up! (Maybe I will actually TAKE that walk today….)
